Matthew Shafran, Esquire graduated from Florida State University in 2009 from the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Criminology. Following his undergraduate career, Mr. Shafran attended law school at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broard Law Center, where he obtained his juris doctor in 2012.
While in law school, Mr. Shafran worked as a teaching and research assistant for his first year criminal law professor. Not only did he work on cases for the Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals, but he also held weekly workshops and tutoring sessions for the first year criminal law students who needed assistance. Additionally, Mr. Shafran was the competitions coordinator for the Nova Trial Association, as well as an advocate who competed with other law students across the state of Florida in multiple mock trial competitions.
Mr. Shafran was a judicial intern for the Honorable Judge Thomas M. Lynch IV, whom at the time, was presiding over one of several felony criminal trial divisions in Circuit Court for the 17th Judicial Circuit, located in Broward County, Florida. During his time as a judicial intern, he was witness to numerous jury and non-jury trials, conducted research for and had many discussions with one of Broward County’s best judges.
Following his judicial internship, Mr. Shafran worked as an intern and certified legal intern for the Office of the State Attorney here in West Palm Beach, Florida. During his time there he gained valuable experience by trying multiple misdemeanors cases in front of a jury. In fact, prior to the conclusion of his internship, Mr. Shafran was offered and accepted a position with the State Attorney’s office upon his graduation from law school.
Following law school, Mr. Shafran began his career as an Assistant State Attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit, in West Palm Beach, Florida. As a County Court prosecutor, he handled thousands of cases and over 300 cases at any one given time. He was first in his class to be promoted to Lead Attorney, where he had the responsibility of overseeing and teaching multiple prosecutors. Mr. Shafran quickly rose up the ranks at the State Attorney’s Office, subsequently being promoted to the Felony Trial Division where he handled over 150 felony cases ranging from third degree felony’s to some of the most serious first degree felony charges possible. Beyond arguing countless motions in front of various judges in Palm Beach County, as a prosecutor, Mr. Shafran tried 40 cases in front of a jury, including misdemeanor and felony charges.
During his tenure as an Assistant State Attorney, Mr. Shafran was known for being a fair, ethical, and professional prosecutor who was committed to the advocacy of victims. Similarly, as a criminal defense attorney, Mr. Shafran is committed to protecting individuals’ rights and freedoms by passionately advocating on behalf of those accused of committing a crime in Palm Beach County and Broward County.
