Can we file for an extension before the divorce hearing without dismissing the case?

Yes, if you and your husband both wish to postpone the temporary orders hearing, you can (or one or both of your lawyers can, if you have lawyers) prepare a joint motion and stipulation for continuance of the temporary orders hearing, file that with the court, submit a proposed order along with the motion to the court to sign so that there will be an order granting your motion and continuing the hearing. To my knowledge, there are no fill in the blank forms that exist for this purpose, but if you ask an attorney to help you draw these up, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for them. If you have attorneys, they should be able to draft something up like this in no time (and I also wouldn't pay my attorney more than $100 for this service as well).

Can he really take 1/2 of everything even though he's gambled most of his income in the last 10 years?

Your question appears to be based more on fear and misinformation and doesn't recognize the reality that if you and your husband cannot agree on how to end things fairly a judge will have to hear all the evidence and make decisions based on hearing all the relevant evidence. You have some valid arguments concerning what is or isn't fair in your case, but it will be up to a judge to decide and what your husband says or threatens simply shows that he doesn't know what he is talking about.

There is no common law marriage in Arizona so it appears as though you do not have to file for divorce.
