Do I have a case if I feel threatened by a man who showered me and my daughter with gifts and befriended me?

If you have a lawyer.. not sure why you are asking me. Sounds to me like this is a case of "failure to communicate". Based upon what you have told me, he may be getting mixed messages. You have certainly "leaned on him" for the last three weeks' taking gifts from him, having him take you places, and even multiple instances of intimacy. Then you go completely quiet for a few days. He probably does not know how to take this. Sounds like he is a very lonely person. Maybe you both are?? In any event, sounds like you and he need to really sit down and make clear what your respective expectations are. Since I don't know anything more than what you have told me, I have no way of knowing if he poses any threat.

Do I need an attorney for a first time marijuana possession charge?

You won't get a public defender if it's a municipal ordinance violation. Public defenders only handle state charges. You definitely need to hire a criminal defense attorney to represent you. It's not the prosecutor's job (or the judge's job) to offer you a good deal. If you have no prior convictions for a drug-related offense, then your attorney can probably negotiate a plea bargain to get the possession charge reduced to "Littering" with a fine and court costs. You probably won't have to appear in court. You might have to attend a drug education class. Call around and get some price quotes from criminal defense attorneys, but if this is in the St. Louis area, I would suggest that a fair price to pay a lawyer to handle this would be $350-$400, depending on which court it's in, how soon the court date is, and your criminal history.

Should I consider taking this to court even though it has been many years since the initial incident?

GO ahead to court. Demand a jury trial. After you finish with the trial, you make sure you get sympathy from your bunkmate at the jail. You were driving without a license and got caught. END OF STORY. Everything else is some fantasy in your head.
