If you have been charged with a crime, you need a lawyer; it is that simple. Do not attempt to do this yourself. Do not talk with the Police. Remain silent. It is your right.

If I was charged with $1500 of embezzlement with my job but I was not arrested, will that be on my background check?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that case might not be over. Unless the statute of limitations has run charges can still be filed. If the police were involved they have begun an investigation at the very least, which may not yet be completed. Once it is, they will take it to the DA who will decide whether or not sufficient evidence exists to file charges. If they do not, the case will be rejected but you won't know this unless you have an attorney monitoring the situation for you. In any event, your record may indicate a contact or investigation but thus far, no arrest or conviction. Be advised that you should make no further statements to the cops, your former employer, or anyone else about this situation without your attorney present. Anything you say can and WILL be used against you so beware.

If I have a warrant out for my arrest, should I have an attorney with me when I turn myself in?

You can either make a bond through a bondsman or post a cash bond. You will be taken in, fingerprinted, photographed, and released. You will need a lawyer, though.
