Depends on lots of factors, but suffice it to say that you are probably facing some stiff penalties. Now is the time to hire a local criminal defense lawyer. If you can't afford to hire one, go to your court date and ask the judge to appoint the public defender.

Your question requires an attorney consultation. It is not a simple question that can be answered on this type of forum. There are many factors that would need to be considered and evaluated. I strongly suggest that you contact an experienced criminal defense attorney for a face-to-face consultation and give him/her all of the facts surrounding your arrest. (S)he would then be in a better position to analyze your case and advise you of your options.

How long is he looking at jail time for stealing?

In California, if convicted of any felony, you face one or more years in prison, plus fines; on any misdemeanor, you potentially face up to 12 months in jail, plus fines. Priors and strikes will add penalty enhancements under the 3-Strikes rules. One strike doubles the penalties. Two strikes makes the third strike-able offense 25 to life. If this constitutes a probation or parole violation, factor those new violation charge[s] and old deferred sentence[s] in as well. You'll learn the actual charge[s] and enhancements filed and get copies of all the police reports, evidence and test results when appearing for arraignment at the first court hearing. The charges determine how much time and fines could potentially be imposed if convicted. The prosecutors can amend at any time they believe they can prove additional or different charges. If I read your text right, he has prior felonies, which means he likely will also be charged with felon in possession, carrying prison time. The honest answer is that no attorney can predict the outcome, nor even give an intelligent opinion, without reviewing and knowing all the charges, evidence, police reports, testimony, priors history, etc. Without knowing all those factors, any opinion would be worthless speculation.
